CCTV data protection code of practice

The Information Commissioner published the first CCTV data protection code of practice in 2000. This code has been used by those operating CCTV systems to help ensure that their use of CCTV complies with the Data Protection Act 1998 and follows good practice standards.>

Since its publication a lot has been learned about how useful the code has proved in practice. There have also been significant practical and legal developments in the use of CCTV.

Consultation with practioners has shown that whilst much of the original code is still of relevance it would benefit from updating. This revised edition has been produced to reflect these needs and to ensure that it remains up to date and relevant. It also brings together other guidance issued on the use of very limited CCTV schemes into one document.

The Commissioner is consulting widely on this draft revised code and encourages comments from all of those who may be affected by its provisions. Once these comments are assessed the Commissioner will issue a revised code but until a revised code is issued the provisions of the existing code remain in effect.
