Federation for Small Businesses urges members to join local Police Authorities
In common with other Police Authorities, Essex Police Authority is looking for three new independent members to take up their seats by October. Local businesspeople are being urged to apply so that business interests are properly represented.
The Essex FSB (Federation of Small Businesses) wants local business owners to apply to join the authority, which has three vacancies for lay members. Ken Wickham, Essex FSB spokesman on Crime Against Business, said: "New legislation means that from October 2008, Essex Police Authority will need an extra three independent members, which is why there are currently advertisements encouraging people to apply for one of the places." Police Authorities have a supervisory and governance role over their local police forces and the government is keen to ensure that the Authorities are properly representative of the communicities that the police serve. The job takes around ten hours per week and the term of office is for four years. Participants - who must be over 18 - are entitled to an allowance plus expenses for the work they do. According to Robert Chambers, Chairman of the Essex Police Authority, “By becoming a member of the Essex Police Authority you will have the opportunity to help shape local policing in your area and make a real difference to the lives of those who live, work and visit Essex. Essex Police Authority needs to reflect all communities throughout our county. We are particularly looking for people who are active in their local communities who are likely to have skills to enable us to do our work more efficiently and effectively for the people of Essex. We are also looking for Independent members who may possess other valuable expertise in areas such as management, business, finance, public service, marketing and PR.” Details are available from epa@essex.pnn.police.uk or call 01245 291600.
