Graffiti project rejected by Amesbury councillors
A graffiti project proposed by the local Neighbourhood Policing Tasking Group for young people in Amesbury, Wiltshire, has been rejected by the town council.
The project would have involved a professional artist working with youngsters to try and cut criminal damage around the town. However nearby residents have objected to the idea of any more graffiti in the area and their views have been supported by local councillors. Inspector Martyn Sweett from Amesbury Police told a meeting of the town council that the force was in contact with a local school about holding the project there, as they had completed a similar successful project in the past. But Cllr Andy Rhind-Tutt spoke out against the project: "No matter how good an artist they are, graffiti looks awful to the naked eye. I don't agree with doing any of that in the town." Another councillor said that the sort of individuals who do graffiti don't want to be watched by a professional, they do it in secret and then enjoy the satisfaction of knowing they've done it. The majority of councillors voted against giving the project their support. For the rest of this news item from The Salisbury Journal click here
