Could 'electronic' ciggies help save declining pubs?

Alternative cigarettes could help ease some of the pain that pubs and licensed premises are suffering following the year-old smoking ban. Initial impressions at a recent trade show were positive...

Electronic or alternative cigarettes give users the sensation of smoking, even producing a vapour that can be inhaled and exhaled while delivering the nicotine hit, but are legal as no harmful smoke is emitted.

One brand on the market is the Ultimo from SuperSmoker of Belgium. It retails at around £78 and its inventors say the system helps people lead a healthier lifestyle, is 65 per cent cheaper than real smoking - and alllows the smoker to enjoy a better social life.costs.

The 'cigarettes' were distributed at the London Bar Show last week where they received generally positive reactions.Cartridges are placed into a pre-charged atomizer and users suck on it like a normal cigarette. SuperSmoker says it looks, tastes and smokes like a conventional cigarette but has no detrimental health effects on others and doesn’t cause cancer.
