Scheme gives vandals a sense of local pride, and cuts crime
A project to give troubled teens more pride in their estates by getting them to carry out repairs has been hailed a success.
Four young people who had previously been accused of criminal damage on Mirfield's London Park estate were asked to help repair fencing – and rewarded with vouchers for JJB Sports. The scheme was carried out by Kirklees Neighbourhood Housing (KNH)senior estate management officers Debbie Hugill and Julie Hopkins. They approached youths hanging around the estate and asked them what they would like to improve in their neighbourhood. Neighbourhood operations manager Christine Gummerson said Mirfield East tenants' and residents' association was so pleased with the results members had agreed to pay for more JJB Sports vouchers so the scheme could continue.
