Australia faces admin challenges in implementing nationwide booze controls
Binge drinking and alcohol problems among young people have forced legislators in Australia to consider sweeping new booze controls across the country. Options under consideration including putting troubled pubs under a strict probation scheme, licensing private parties with over 100 guests, and more...
New pubs, clubs and bottle shops would be subject to a P-plate system and demerit points under a tougher, national regime to curb binge drinking and late-night violence. Australia's councils have recommended sweeping changes to controls over alcohol supply and sales, from banning alcohol advertising and sponsorship to making alcohol licences mandatory for private parties with more than 100 guests. But at the core of the National Local Government Drug and Alcohol Advisory Committee's submission, presented to state and federal ministers responsible for drug strategy, is discontent with differences in liquor licensing laws around the country.
