Pubs urged to invest in their own metal detectors

Pubs in Manchester are being urged to introduce weapon scanners over Christmas and the New Year. Manchester's licensees expect an extra 125,000 revellers in the city over the period.

Manchester's pub and club network has asked its members to ensure a series of measures are in place to beat knife crime, including extra searches of customers, fully operational CCTV and the use of scanning wands or arches. Pub and club bosses say the measures are designed to reassure party goers and not to intimidate them.

The metal-detecting equipment is available to all pubs and clubs, although they will have to foot the bill; hand-held wands are cheaper than the ultra-sensitive arches.
