Police warn lorry drivers to beware as Christmas approaches

Lorry drivers are being urged to be careful where they park in Northamptonshire after police launched an operation to combat thefts from the vehicles. Police say the run-up to Christmas traditionally sparks a rise in the number of thefts from HGVs.

Officers will visit locations where HGVs have previously been targete and hand out leaflets to lorry drivers. The leaflets, written in nine different languages,  advise drivers not to park in well-known theft hot spots including lay-bys and industrial estates.

Northamptonshire Police also has a lorry trailer emblazoned with words 'Truckers beware, this is a lorry load theft hotspot', which is taken to locations across the county as appropriate.

Most of the crimes take place overnight while the lorry is parked up either with or without the driver sleeping in the vehicle.
