Human Rights of relatives of gangsters breached, says Liberty

By portraying images of convicted gangsters, Manchester Police are denying relatives their Human Roghts, says human rights charity Liberty. The images were used by police on posters urging youngsters not to be tempted to join gangs.

In April, Colin Joyce and Lee Amos, who were the leaders of the notorious Gooch Gang, were jailed for 39 and 35 years respectively for the murders of Ucal Chin, 24, and 23-year-old Tyrone Gilbert. Now their families are taking action against Greater Manchester Police because they have become a target for vigilantes since billboards showing images of the two murderers were put up across the city.

Liberty director Shami Chakrabati said the posters - which depict how the gangsters might look by the time they are eligible to be released - were leaving innocent and vulnerable people open to attacks and has requested a judicial review to allow it to take Greater Manchester Police to court for breaching Article Eight of the Human Rights
