New data-sharing system for jewellers to reduce gem thefts

The National Association of Goldsmiths (NAG) and insurers TH March have founded an initiative called SaferGems to coordinate information on incidents and suspicious activity and send alerts out to jewellers.

Crime at jewellery retailers has risen in the recession, with thieves targeting stores as banks and building societies increase security, making them less favourable targets.

SaferGems will cover the UK, Isle of Man and the Channel Islands. It will include a serving police officer with access to police intelligence and direct links into all the UK police forces. It aims to:

• Co-ordinate data from the trade on incidents and suspicious events
• Send alerts to members of the NAG and those insured via T H March
• Co-ordinate data across police forces to improve identification and conviction of criminals.
