Government hopes new shatterproof beer mugs will reduce 'glassing' attacks

With 87,000 alcohol-related glass attacks each year in the UK, a shatterproof pint glass has been unveiled a designs company, with support from the goverment.

The new, safer version of the classic pint glass could be in pubs and clubs across the country within a year. The glasses  are injected with a strong resin which holds shards together when they break, making them ineffectve as cutting weapons.

Home Secretary Alan Johnson unveiled the prototypes at a launch this week and underlined the importance of reducing the damage that can be done by using conventional glasses in brawls:  "It's about bringing together all the talents of design and technology and innovation to find a solution to this problem.
