New hi-tech 3D scanner showcased by police
A scanner which can rotate around a scene in 360 degrees and produce detailed 3D images of the area has been unveiled by Essex police, and could soon be rolled out to another 25 forces. The device can reduce police time at a scene by as much as 50% and the evidence it collects can be used in court.
The scanner works by using a laser beam to survey and record 120,000 tiny details of the scene every second while slowly rotating on a 360 degree axis. Trials show the scanner can collect a third more data than a police officer in less than half the time - keeping every detail of the scene in pristine digital detail for future playback and analysis. The equipment has been jointly funded by the Department of Transport, the National Policing Improvement Agency, Essex Police Authority and Essex County Council.
