Stab-proof vests issued to council workers

Stab-proof vests have been issued to street cleaners and litter monitors in Merton after a council employee was stabbed while on patrol.

The assault occured in November when an enforcement officer was taking photos of an alleyway.  Two men demanded money before one stabbed the victim’and both fled the scene. No one has yet been apprehended in connection with the attack. The victim has since made a full recovery.

In 2008, Wimbledon street cleaners were issued with the vests amid growing concern over the level of drunken disorder in the town centre on Friday and Saturday nights. As a precaution Merton  council has now issued stab-proof vests to all its enforcement and inspection officers.
