New rules unveiled to control lapdancing clubs

Residents will be able to force the closure of lapdancing clubs near schools, churches and in quiet residential areas under powers unveiled this week.

Existing strip clubs will have to apply for a new licence or face closure under the rules, which come into force in April. Town halls will be allowed to set a cap on the number of strip clubs in a given area, or ban them altogether.

Existing rules mean that councils can only block a lapdancing venue from opening if they can prove that it encourages crime, disorder and public nuisance or they endanger public safety or the protection of children.

In future local residents will be able to complain if lapdancing bars try to open near schools or religious buildings. Occasional nude performances in pubs or working mens' clubs will not face similar restrictions. Striptease acts are permitted as long as there are fewer than 12 a year in one venue.
